This is a brief timeline listing specific dates during WWII that help to place Henry's story in a broader context.

1939 

Sept 1st, 1939 – Germany invades Poland

Sept 3rd, 1939 – Britain, France, Australia and New Zealand declare war

Sept 17th, 1939 – Soviets invade Eastern Poland  

1940 

June 14th, 1940 – Germany enters Paris

July 10th, 1940 – Battle of Britain

1941 

June 22nd, 1941 – Operation Barbarossa (Germany invades Soviet Union)

Dec 7th, 1941 – Attack on Pearl Harbor

Dec 11th, 1941 – Germany declares war on U.S.

1943

Jan 1st, 1943 – Germans surrender at Stalingrad

1944 

Jan 6th, 1944 – Soviets advance into Poland

June 6th, 1944 – Allied invasion of Normandy

Dec 16th, 1944 – Battle of Bulge begins

1945 

Jan 17th, 1945 – Soviets capture Warsaw

Jan 16th, 1945 – Soviets liberate Auschwitz

Feb 19th, 1945 – Landing of U.S. troops at Iwo Jima

April 1st, 1945 – Landing of U.S. troops at Okinawa

April 12th, 1945 – President Franklin Roosevelt dies

April 23rd, 1945 – Soviets enter Berlin

April 30th, 1945 – Hitler commits suicide

May 7th, 1945 – Germans surrender unconditionally

Aug 6th, 1945 – Atomic bomb dropped on Hiroshima

Aug 8th, 1945 – Soviets declare war on Japan

Aug 14th, 1945 – Japan surrenders
